From time to time I will drop by with an update on how my garden is doing. For past observations visit the Garden Archives.

June 3, 2006

There's so much blooming in the garden right now: iris, columbine, coral bells, honeysuckle, roses are budding, as are peonies.  The lilacs are finished blooming.  The burgundy smoke tree we planted last year has gorgeous foliage and the flowers are just budding.  Although it was warm very early in the spring, we've had a lot of cool, rainy weather and there's a lot of catching up to do: weeding, thinning out, transplanting.  The lemon verbena I thought wouldn't overwinter has flourished but the lemon thyme didn't survive.  The crocuses did well this year and the tulips but the hyacinths looked rather pitiful.

Last summer we decided to replace our deck with a patio.  Our yard isn't large and I felt it would appear larger without a deck sticking up in the middle of it.  It has changed the look of the garden greatly.  We're very pleased with it.  Now that we don't have to go around the deck to get to the shed I was able to widen the bed between the patio and the fence by eliminating the 'lawn' that was there which never grew grass.

We have tried to keep an up-to-date list of the plants in our garden with information on when they were acquired, from where, bloom times and notes on how they are doing.  The notes in the table pertain to 1998 & 1999.  From now on I will use this page rather than the table to record my observations and comments.
